How to calculate hours between two times

Enter a start time and an end time. The Hours Calculator returns the gap in hours and minutes and, crucially, in decimal hours — the format used for billing, invoicing, and payroll. From 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM is 8 hours 30 minutes, or 8.5 hours.

Why decimal hours matter

Most pay and billing systems expect hours as a decimal, not as hours-and-minutes. To convert minutes to decimal hours, divide by 60: 15 minutes is 0.25, 30 minutes is 0.5, and 45 minutes is 0.75. This calculator does it automatically.
