How a time card calculator works

A time card calculator turns a clock-in time, a clock-out time, and an unpaid break into total paid hours. Paid time equals clock-out minus clock-in, minus the break. From 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM with a 30-minute break is 8.0 paid hours.

Decimal hours for payroll

Results are shown in both clock format and decimal hours, because payroll systems expect decimals. The calculator also handles overnight shifts that cross midnight, so a 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM shift totals correctly.

  • Overnight and late shifts
  • Decimal hours ready for payroll

From time card to timesheet

This page totals a single shift. Weekly and biweekly multi-shift totals are coming to the Timesheet Calculator. For simple hour math without breaks, use the Hours Calculator.

Always confirm totals against your employer’s official timekeeping policy.
